Gwenn Leatherman ’16, ’20 chose Shenandoah because she wanted to attend a school with a proven reputation for preparing nurse practitioners for fulfilling roles in the community.
“Shenandoah is an excellent and organized university. They provide the education needed to succeed in our roles,” said Leatherman. She is still connected with classmates from her time at Shenandoah and is fond of the relationships she made.
Leatherman began her educational journey at Frederick Community College as a registered nurse in 2009. She then went on to the University of Notre Dame in 2012 for her bachelor’s degree in nursing before attending Shenandoah. While at Shenandoah, she received a Master of Science in family practice in 2016 and a Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2020.
Now, Leatherman owns Leatherman Healthcare, LLC., an adult primary care practice in Hagerstown, Maryland. Leatherman Healthcare manages all aspects of health for people 18 or older, including acute care and laboratory testing. Leatherman also serves as an adjunct professor at Shenandoah and finds joy in helping family nurse practitioner students strive for success in their future careers.
Before starting her own practice, Leatherman served as the family nurse practitioner for Opal Medical Group in Hagerstown, Maryland, and South Mountain Community Health in Boonsboro, Maryland. Leatherman is also a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners Association of Maryland.
Leatherman’s advice to current and future students is: “Study and attend extra clinical opportunities.”
